Michelstadt with its brightly coloured, half-timbered buildings

The charming area around the Odenwald offers many possibilities, on the way to and from Frankfurt, for accommodation with regional roots. Michelstadt is one lovely example. It is a real treat to walk through its crooked alleyways and beside its enchanting half-timbered houses. The historic half-timbered town hall in Michelstadt, which dates from 1484, gives the marketplace a very special atmosphere, with its late-Gothic pointed gables and little turrets. But there is a lot more to discover: the Kellereihof, an early mediaeval castle complex today houses the Odenwald and Toy Museum; and the Michelstadt synagogue is one of the few still left in the region.
